چکیده

In this paper we report the application of a five-parameter determination of grain boundary types to grain boundary engineered alpha-brass. The data are discussed particularly in terms of the distribution of boundary planes, and also with respect to the potential relationship between the planes distribution and the misorientation distribution. Approximately 20,000 grains comprised the total sample population, giving rise to more than 77,000 grain boundary line segments. This is the first time that the orientation of a large sample population of grain boundary planes has been measured in a grain boundary engineered material. The most important findings of the investigation were that the distribution of planes shows a prevalence of <110> tilt boundaries, especially asymmetric tilt types, and the presence of <111> twist boundaries. This distribution is a consequence of the low energy of these boundary types. Furthermore more than three-quarters of boundaries could be considered to be ‘potentially special’. The presence of these boundaries greatly fragmented the grain boundary network. This fragmentation is probably a key factor in the development of superior properties in a grain boundary engineered material.

Five-parameter grain boundary distribution in grain boundary engineered brass

We report the first application of a five-parameter determination of grain boundary types to grain boundary engineered alpha-brass. The most important findings were that the distribution of planes showed a prevalence of <110> tilt boundaries, especially asymmetric tilt types, and the presence of <111> twist boundaries. This distribution resulted from the low energy of these boundary types.

Distribution of Grain Boundary Planes and Misorientations in Magnesium Oxide

We have developed a technique that allows the geometry and crystallography of large quantities of contiguous crystallites to be accurately characterized. Using this technique, in concert with high precision serial sectioning, we have extracted the geometric and crystallographic configuration of approximately 2.5 mm of grain boundary area in a 0.33 mm volume of polycrystalline magnesium oxide. U...

Distribution of Grain Boundary Planes at Coincident Site Lattice Misorientations

The grain boundary plane distributions in MgO, SrTiO3, MgAl2O4, and Al are compared at lattice misorientations with a coincident site density of greater than or equal to 1/9. In most situations, the most frequently adopted grain boundary orientation is a habit plane of low index and low surface energy that depends on the particular material. Cases where the most common boundary orientation is a...

Crystallographic Distribution of Internal Interfaces in Spinel Polycrystals

Measurements of the grain boundary character distribution in MgAl2O4 (spinel) as a function of lattice misorientation and boundary plane orientation show that at all misorientations, grain boundaries are most frequently terminated on {111} planes. Boundaries with {111} orientations are observed 2.5 times more frequently than boundaries with {100} orientations. Furthermore, the most common bound...

Changes in the five-parameter grain boundary character distribution in a-brass brought about by iterative thermomechanical processing

This paper analyzes the changes in the five-parameter grain boundary character distribution in a-brass brought about by iterative thermomechanical processing (ITMP). In both reference and ITMP specimens, there was a tendency for boundaries to terminate on {111} planes. The high incidence of coherent twins and other boundaries terminated on {111} planes led to a high concentration of asymmetric ...
